SKPC FAQ - South Kildare Photography Club

Who are South Kildare Photography Club (SKPC)?

SKPC was formed in October 2008 to bring together people with an interest in photography. The aims of the Club are to promote photography, photographic achievement and skills, in a relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Who can join?

Any adult with an interest in photography is welcome to join. I am under 18, can I still join? Membership is only open to over 18s, as soon as you’re 18, your more than welcome. When does the Club meet? Between September and June we meet on most Thursday evenings at 8pm. During the Summer we do ad-hoc practical nights.

Where does the Club meet?

We regularly meet upstairs at Ryston Sports and Social Club, Kilbelin, County Kildare

Find Us on Google Maps...

Occasionally we go out for practical nights so please check out our schedule on the homepage to see where we'll be meeting next.

How much is membership?

Membership is €25 per year and there is a €5 charge to attend club nights in Ryston. When can I join? You're welcome to join at anytime. Come along to one of the club nights and check us out free of charge. If you like what you see then we'd love to have you join us.

Do I need a good camera to join?

No, any camera will do, in fact there's no requirement to have a camera in order to be a member, all you need is an interest in photography.

I want to have a camera before I join, which should I buy?

Choose the best camera you can comfortably afford and that meets your needs. Consideration should be given to the type of photography you're interested in, how much you want to invest, any equipment you already have and what you are comfortable using. A camera should be treated as an investment, do your research and shop around. Our members have lots of different makes and models, there’ll be someone who can help you and remember it doesn’t have to be the top of the range model.

Do I have to enter competitions?

No, we encourage members to enter our competitions as it helps you develop as a photographer but there's no pressure.

I'm a beginner, should I wait till I'm experienced to join?

No, we welcome members of all abilities. We have in the past run beginners workshops for club members and our members are happy to answer any questions you have. If you would like to attend a beginners workshop, please let us know and we can run another, subject to demand.

Would I be expected to attend every week?

No, come as often or a little as you like. The more you come, the more you'll get out of the club however there's not pressure to attend.

What do you do at your meetings?

There's a varied schedule selected by the committee each month. This normally consists of:

- Presentations/lectures by guest speakers

- Demonstrations or practical workshops

- Club competitions and critique

- Outings and exhibitions

The committee always welcomes suggestions from club members of what to schedule.

What if I want to take my photography to the next level?

We are affiliated with the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) who offer the IPF Distinctions service. Some members have already achieved these distinctions and there is help on hand within the Club to guide you through the process.
